PETER PAN, Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: 8 Dec–9 January Kickstart’s end of the year’s Festive Season production will not be a pantomime this year, but an ambitious full scale musical version of Peter Pan! Directed by Steven Stead (who was the first male actor... to play Peter in this country in 1992) and designed by Greg King, this show will be a feast for eye and ear, and promises sumptuous sets and dazzling special effects; a feast for the whole family. Cliff and The Shadows (Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch & Brian Bennett) dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, enjoying both solo and joint success. Between them they achieved no less than 19 number one hits. They appeared together in the movies ‘Summer Holiday’ and ‘The Young Ones’, from which came million-selling hit singles and albums. From 1968 both Cliff Richard and The Shadows pursued individual careers. Throughout the 70s and 80s The Shadows toured regularly and enjoyed Top 10 successes, often competing with Cliff for the number one spot. Cliff went on to achieve huge worldwide success as a solo artist, scoring the most Top 10 and Top 20 hits in the UK singles Chart. RIVERS OF THE WORLD, Informative Outdoor Art Exhibition, at the Durban Botanical Gardens. The ever-proactive British Council is bringing its outdoor touring exhibition to Durban. In 2007/8 learners from various schools and educational centres in London (UK); Shanghai (China); Kolkata (India); Cairo (Egypt); Sao Paulo & Recife (Brazil); the State of Veracruz (Mexico) and Cape Town worked with artists to create a series of magnificent large-format artworks inspired by their city’s river. The artwork, and accompanying narrative, is being displayed in this innovative touring exhibition. The exhibition is travelling to each of the riverside locations in each of the participating cities. Based on the astonishing response to their former British Council environmental-themed exhibition, the hugely successful Zero Carbon City exhibition, the British Council is including Durban in the international tour of Rivers of the World. The Gardens’ education officer, Martin Clement, is encouraging school groups to visit the exhibition and learn about the world’s major rivers, some of the issues affecting them, and the people who engage with them. 11. CAN YOU HELP?

DOMESTIC ANIMAL RESCUE: I single-handedly run an organisation called Domestic Animal Rescue from my family’s home in Alverstone, KZN.  All the cats and other animals in my care are from previously disadvantaged circumstances, where their lives were either in immediate danger, or they were severely neglected or simply abandoned. Most of my cats are from Shongweni Township. My friend, Cynthia, cares for a large group of orphans, who have been helping us remove cats from threatening situations, where children either burn them alive, stone them to death, drown them or play football with them.  Other cats aren’t wanted in many households, so rather than see them killed by people, the orphans make these people aware that Cynthia and I will come and remove the cats. I also get distress calls from suburbs in and around Durban, including factories and trucking yards. The cats are immediately taken to my vet, (Grant Emmerich of Blair Athol Vet), and are often treated for illnesses and poor nutrition. When healthy enough, they are all sterilized, (at a cost of R150 male / R300 female), vaccinated at a cost of R50 each, and de-wormed, (varying between R20 and R50 depending of severity of infestation).  Fortunately my vet does not charge consultation fees, yet pharmaceutical costs for medical treatment are astronomical!  Presently, cat food costs me R500 per week. This does not include the dogs, birds and pony in my care. I am very strict with my adoption process, and an adoption form needs to be completed with all the persons personal details, (as per SPCA instruction), in order for me to follow up on the animals well being. I do not like taking cash donations, and would rather receive cat food, dog food, birdseed, animal blankets and baskets, sleeping kennels, toys etc. For those interested in supporting efforts to help feed and cloth the orphans, food parcels, clothing, shoes and socks are always appreciated. Submitting Notices, Ads or Changes: If you have something you would like to tell people about, all you need to do is send through a brief notice along with your contact name, telephone number & email address. The Publishers will, at their discretion, include it in the next issue. Please note that no graphics or attachments will be included and notices will appear in plain text format only.

To keep the newsletter interesting & varied, we try to send out new information in each newsletter, so new material will be given preference: if necessary, re-word your notice. You will need to resubmit each time you want your notice to appear. PLEASE, when submitting your notices, send them in as brief a format as you can, in plain text only, just like a "classified ad" in the newspaper… NO PICS OR ATTACHMENTS, please!! Send to Word-of-Mouth@tiscali.co.za in plain text format only, in the body of the email.

Ideally, notices should be approximately 450 characters, or 50 to 60 words maximum, if possible. As this is a "spare time" initiative, there is very limited time in which to edit & reformat material, so those who send it through in the correct format have a far greater chance of being included!
