GARY THOMAS LIVE, 7.30pm, 4 Sept, at Luna Lounge, 16
Dan Pienaar Rd, Kloof. While upon first glance Gary
Thomas may appear like a confused fuzzy woodland creature,
he is infact a psychedelic one-man anti-folk jamming
machine. Not in a mechanical way, but masterful in his
guitar technique and instrumentation, his skill is matched
by few on the music scene. Thomas is delightfully nonchalant
and understated on stage making his live performances
intriguing. That, and the fact that at any given point
he has foot on stomp box, one hand plucking guitar,
the other hand hitting guitar for percussion and singing
all at the same time. R40pp. Bookings now as easy as

MADAME PRESIDENT, until 6 Sept, at the Playhouse Drama
Theatre, Dbn. The ever-busy K-Caps based in Ekhaya Multi
Arts Centre, KwaMashu, have created a topical new musical
perfectly timed for Women’s Day, which examines
some of the issues which would be grappled with were
SA to democratically elect a woman as its next president.
Penned and directed by Edmund Mhlongo, with musical
direction & music by Linda Ngcwensa (leader of gospel
group Avante), featuring a cast of 25 singers / actors
/ dancers all with the K-Cap company. The production
is ideal for public audiences, as well as for daytime
school groups. Times are changing, and women the world
over hold positions of immense power – politically,
socially and economically. It can be argued that it
would be a natural progression in the future of SA that
a woman could emerge as an appropriate leader and ultimately
be elected to the highest office in the land –
that of President of South Africa. Bookings at Computicket.

FRANK, until 6 Sept, at the Catalina Theatre, Wilson's
Wharf, Dbn. Frank is a new South African play about
family relationships and the power of secrets to impact
and sometimes destroy lives. Just what is Frank’s
secret? Dorothy knows it, but she hopes that nobody
else ever discovers it. Lloyd discovered it years ago
and it drove him over the sea and far away from friends
and family. Delia is blissfully unaware of how Frank’s
secret is about to dramatically alter the course of
her life. Set in Durban at the beginning of 2009, SA
is in the grip of the controversial Zuma trial by media,
election fever and a recession. A family wedding brings
the Ogle’s together and the proverbial chickens
come home to roost. Each member of the family has a
secret and an agenda. Through their interaction and
flashbacks, a pattern of family secrecy and betrayal
is exposed. While, Frank is a modern South African drama
full of humour and pathos, it is also a universal story
about how we are affected by the choices and actions
of that intimate circle we happily or begrudgingly call
family. Finally, it reveals that the truth will always
out, no matter how deeply it is buried… The cast
includes Chantal Snyman, Gail Snyman & Jonathan
Tifflin. Tickets R90pp /R45 for pensioners, students
and matinees. Contact Thandeka at the Catalina on 031
305 6889. Charities or organisations wanting to fundraise
are particularly encouraged to get hold of Chantal/or
Gail. A special offer for corporates includes a dinner
and harbour cruise with the cast.

FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY, 28 Sept-4 Oct, at the Elizabeth
Sneddon Theatre, UKZN, Dbn. One of Durban's few surviving
dance companies showcases their awesome creativity
THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC… until 11 Oct, at the
Barnyard Theatre, Gateway. Like the two bands the show
pays tribute to, Dancing Queen has been such a phenomenal
success that The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is bringing
it back for an encore season! Dancing Queen brings
together two of the most influential pop and rock groups
of all time – ABBA and Queen. This elaborate production
takes you on a trip back through space and time when
glitz, glam and some of the greatest pop tunes ever
written emerged in the 70s & early 80s. On the other
side of Dancing Queen we encounter a different musical
experience that compliments the poppy tunes of ABBA
as we introduce the music of Queen - a band that symbolised
the excessive and over the top showmanship that characterised
the decadence of the same period. Queen were noted for
their musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements,
vocal harmonies and the talented cast pull this off

The legendary CHRIS DE BURGH LIVE IN DURBAN! 17 November,
presented by East Coast Radio, at the Indoor Arena,
ICC Durban. Few artists can lay claim to international
success spanning three decades, but beginning with his
very first release, Chris de Burgh has achieved precisely
that. From 1975 with the release of his debut album
‘Far Beyond These Castle Walls’ he has achieved
the absolute pinnacle every artist dreams off, consistently
garnering fans from all walks of life, right across

Other Stories’ was Chris’ first major hit
in SA and the first single ‘Just Another Poor
Boy’ from this album was No. 1 for many weeks.
Chris continually seeks new challenges for himself as
a musician and in 1995 his whole album ‘Beautiful
Dreams’ realised a life long ambition to have
his music recorded in a classical style with a full
32-piece orchestra. Tickets R225-R375 from Computicket

LIFE JOURNEY - an exhibition of mixed media works by
Di van Wyk, until 12 Sept, in the Middle Gallery at
artSPACE durban. The human condition shown in lines
on people’s faces and the expression in their
eyes is what fascinates Van Wyk. She works from hundreds
of images taken from newspapers, filed in categorised
boxes. Her emotional and intellectual response to an
image at the time is the starting point for the artwork.
Van Wyk uses thin washes of oil paint and then draws
into them using a variety of media, such as conte pastel,
carbon charcoal and graphite depending on the intended
effect. This body of work depicts the life journey that
people take from the years of their childhood through
to old age. artSPACE durban, 3 Millar Rd (off Umgeni),

most sought-after wildlife artists, will be giving a

completing his school education at Grey's College, he
attended the Jhb School of Art. Ian spends long periods

RIVERS OF THE WORLD, Informative Outdoor Art Exhibition,
at the Durban Botanical Gardens. The ever-proactive
British Council is bringing its outdoor touring exhibition
to Durban. In 2007/8 learners from various schools and
educational centres in London (UK); Shanghai (China);
Kolkata (India); Cairo (Egypt); Sao Paulo & Recife
(Brazil); the State of Veracruz (Mexico) and Cape Town
worked with artists to create a series of magnificent
large-format artworks inspired by their city’s
river. The artwork, and accompanying narrative, is being
displayed in this innovative touring exhibition. The
exhibition is travelling to each of the riverside locations
in each of the participating cities. Based on the astonishing
response to their former British Council environmental-themed
exhibition, the hugely successful Zero Carbon City exhibition,
the British Council is including Durban in the international
tour of Rivers of the World. The Gardens’ education
officer, Martin Clement, is encouraging school groups
to visit the exhibition and learn about the world’s
major rivers, some of the issues affecting them, and
the people who engage with them. There are special educational
kits for school groups who visit the exhibition. The
Gardens are open 7 days a week. Entry is free and all
are welcome. School groups are encouraged to contact

send them for job related skills training? YES. That
is all-important. However, what is the use unless they
have the motivation to go back and implement your training?
A positive approach is everything, especially in this
climate. You need flourishing employees in order for
the company to flourish. Let our Fundraising partners
show you how. To book contact Jacqui Osz 031 208 4187

CAN YOU HELP?
The NTUZUMA CARE CENTRE ORPHANAGE building is almost
complete, but we have a long wish list which needs to
be fulfilled before the dream can become a reality.
45 children are currently living in 2 rooms the size
of many people's bathrooms, under the loving care of
a lady with a big heart, who keeps finding babies abandoned
at her front door. Food and basic necessities are provided
by Missions Ablaze. As funds and donations come in,
the work continues. The orphanage will be able to house
125 children, who will be in groups, each with a "mother",
providing as much of a family environment as will be
possible. We need beds, linen, kitchenware - utensils,
bowls, pots, glass & plasticware, grater, bins,
and appliances such as stove, fridge, freezer, microwave,
toaster, 25litre urn, etc. Any support you are able
to give will expedite the realisation of this goal.

STABLES WINE ESTATE SPRING VINE BUDDING FESTIVAL, 12.30pm,
26 September. R85pp, for wine blending competition.
Our annual spring Vine Budding Festival is a celebration
of the new leaves on the vines on the wine farm in Nottingham
Road. It’s a festival of food and wine aimed at
the whole family. Children are entertained while adults
enjoy sampling good wine and fine food. This year we
will be hosting another of our popular wine blending
competitions, where each participant will have access
to a number of wines from different red wine varietals
(Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz & Pinotage)
to try and come up with the ultimate red blend! Sharks
skipper Johann Muller won last year's competition, and
his Cabernet Sauvignon/Pinotage blend was used for the
current vintage of Raggie Red. It is heaps of fun and
a great way to soak up the awesome spring weather in
the KZN midlands with the whole family. Contact 033

DURBAN INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL, free concerts
29 Sept-2 Oct, on Zack's Deck, Wilson's Wharf, Dbn,
culminating in 2 major ticketed events on 3 & 4
Oct. The aim of the Durban International Blues Heritage
Festival has always been to make Durban the ‘Blues
Heritage’ capital of South Africa and not only
to create employment and opportunities for local and
international acts, but to inspire civic pride and stimulate
tourism development in the city.Cape Town and Johannesburg
have clearly established themselves as the main Jazz
Festivals of South Africa, (not to undermine the MTN
Jazz Festival in Dec), Splashy Fen, White Mountain and
Oppi Koppi celebrate Folk and Rock music. Classical
music in the region is taken care of by the KZN Philharmonic.
To mark the 5th anniversary of the event, this year’s
festival expands to world class standards with the extra
special incorporation of the Guiness World Record ™
attempt to gather 2010 guitars on one stage - making
it the LARGEST GUITAR ENSEMBLE – an event done
not only in celebration of the Blues Festival’s
longevity, but also to herald the coming of the 2010
World Cup in Durban next year. The current record, of
1802 Guitarists playing ‘Smoke on the Water’
simultaneously, was set on 26 June 2007 in Leinfelden
– Echtdingen, Germany and the Guitar Ensemble
was led by a band called ‘Party Blues in Bb’.

down through the millennia and to beguile you with the

of volcanoes and meteorites, tsunamis and earthquakes,
as well as more topical issues of global warming and
mass extinctions. In this regard GeoZone is an
earthshaking reference tool to a wide range of topical
subjects including Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Meteorites,

topics are getting plenty of airtime on National Geographic

have to travel to exotic locations to find it.
Right here in your own back yard are fantastic examples

can go out and see it for yourself. And perhaps as the
cherry on the top we have a GeoKids section with heaps
of cool stuff on dinosaurs, volcanoes, earthquakes and

WIDOWED NETWORK SA www.widowed.co.za
: This most valuable support resource is the brainchild
of Tash Reddy who, with her young son Daniel, suffered
the tragic & traumatic loss of their husband &
father. In trying to find ways to deal with her loss,
face the world & be honest with Daniel, Tash found
that there was no existing support network specifically
for this extremely difficult & emotional time in
one's life. From small beginnings in Dbn, it is now
operating nationally, with online support & discussions,
as well as group meetings in various areas. Anyone who
has lost someone close to them will know how difficult
it is to be around others... and how difficult others
find it to be in their company, not knowing what to
say or how to say it. Why close friends suddenly stay
away, or no longer call, children asking simple questions,
to which there appears to be no simple answer. Advice
for suicide survivors, and for friends & family
of the bereaved, dealing with the anger, guilt, faith,
sudden chronic health problems, and so much more. In
memory of her beloved husband Denver, Tash is now dedicating
her life to the healing process for anyone in similar
circumstances. Contact Tash at 084 366 0272 / tash@widowed.co.za

Submitting Notices, Ads or Changes: If you have something
you would like to tell people about, all you need to
do is send through a brief notice along with your contact
name, telephone number & email address. The Publishers
will, at their discretion, include it in the next issue.
Please note that no graphics or attachments will be
included and notices will appear in plain text format
only.
To keep the newsletter interesting & varied, we
try to send out new information in each newsletter,
so new material will be given preference: if necessary,
re-word your notice. You will need to resubmit each
time you want your notice to appear. PLEASE, when submitting
your notices, send them in as brief a format as you
can, in plain text only, just like a "classified ad"
in the newspaper… NO PICS OR ATTACHMENTS, please!!
Send to Word-of-Mouth@tiscali.co.za in plain text format
only, in the body of the email.
Ideally, notices should be approximately 450 characters,
or 50 to 60 words maximum, if possible. As this is a
"spare time" initiative, there is very limited time
in which to edit & reformat material, so those who
send it through in the correct format have a far greater
chance of being included!
Feedback: We'd be most interested to hear about any
response to your ad or notice, as well as any other
comments you may have about the newsletter. When responding
to an ad or notice in WORD of MOUTH in KZN, please tell
them that you found their information here!
Privacy & Integrity: The Publishers undertake that
neither the mailing list nor any contact information,
will be disclosed, sold, loaned or otherwise passed
on to any other party for any use whatsoever. Integrity
is of the utmost importance to the Publishers of WORD

honourable means and is being used in good faith. It
is not our intention to offend or to send emails to
anyone who may not wish to receive them.
Subscribe: Its free and safe. We value your privacy
and it is easy to unsubscribe.
Unsubscribe: Should you wish to be removed from the
mailing list you may do so very easily from the bottom
of each mailing sent. Or, simply send an email to Word-of-Mouth@tiscali.co.za
